Mesothelioma Types

Types of Mesothelioma

The different types of Mesothelioma are distinguished by the different areas they originate in the body. There are four types of Mesothelioma: one that occurs in the lining of the lungs, one around the heart, one surrounding the abdomen and finally a rare case where Mesothelioma is found in the lining of testicles.

Pleural Mesothelioma

Pleural Mesothelioma is the type that affects the lining of the lungs, also known as the pleura. Pleural Mesothelioma is by far the most common case, making up roughly 75 percent of all cases. The common symptoms include shortness of breath, severe coughing, chest pain, fever, and fatigued. These symptoms are similar to other lung related issues which is why Mesothelioma is often misdiagnosed before seeing a specialist.

Peritoneal Mesothelioma

The second most common type of Mesothelioma is Peritoneal Mesothelioma, which makes up about 20 percent of all cases. Peritoneal Mesothelioma occurs in the lining of the abdomen and symptoms generally include: pain in the abdomen, abdominal swelling, weight loss, nausea and fatigue. One issue with Peritoneal Mesothelioma is that the cancer spreads faster than with other types of Mesothelioma.

Pericardial Mesothelioma

Pericardial Mesothelioma is considered rare, only occurring about 1-2 percent of the time, and it affects the lining of the heart. Symptoms are caused by fluid being trapped in the layers of the pericardial membrane and the symptoms include irregular heartbeat, chest pain, coughing, trouble breathing, and fatigue, similar to the symptoms of Pleural Mesothelioma.

Testicular Mesothelioma

It is very rare for Mesothelioma to occur in the testicles, so rare that there are less than 100 cases known in modern medicine of Testicular Mesothelioma. It has been hard for researchers to gather much information on Testicular Mesothelioma because it is so rare, and the only real indicator of the disease is testicular lumps.
