What Is Mesothelioma?

What is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that affects the mesothelium – which is the protective lining of the heart, the lungs and the stomach.  Mesothelioma generally occurs in the lungs (approximately seventy percent of the time) and in the abdomen (approximately thirty percent of the time). Mesothelioma’s only known cause to this day is exposure to asbestos, which is a set of naturally occurring minerals that had been heavily mined starting in the late nineteenth century.  The manufacturers ignored health risks in exchange for asbestos’ affordability and use for insulation.  All major medical inquiries have indicated that there is no threshold for exposure to asbestos before it leads to mesothelioma and other asbestos related diseases.

One problem with asbestos related diseases is that symptoms do not start showing up until 20 to 50 years after exposure.  The symptoms are similar to symptoms of other diseases which is why it is important to see your physician immediately if you believe you have been exposed.  Symptoms may include short breath, coughing, pain in afflicted areas (either chest or abdomen) and sometimes swelling.   Mesothelioma’s prognosis is generally negative and many of the victims are given a short window of remaining life.  There are cases where people suffering from mesothelioma have lived up to an additional 10 to 15 years after the disease was found.  It is highly recommended that you seek a doctor as treatment is available.
